History

In 2004, Joey Jenkins and Andy Vu were on vacation in Palm Springs talking about how blessed they are and how much suffering there is in the world. They believed they could help mobilize people and resources to make a big difference and that if everyone gave a small amount they could change the world. They talked about starting a nonprofit sometime down the road and left it at that.

In the meantime, Joey began dating a girl named Kate Stone. He shared the idea with her and she enthusiastically started helping to brainstorm and get things moving in the right direction. They opened the organization’s first bank account and started tithing to start the nonprofit. A few weeks later Kate died in a tragic car accident, devastating Joey and halting the organization’s formation.

About a year after her death, Andy and Joey were at dinner discussing the nonprofit. Andy made the comment that, “For most people someday never happens — let’s just start this thing now.” A little unsure, Joey agreed. They gathered a few of their closest friends from Oregon State who shared the same core values and beliefs. In November of 2006, Ncompass was formed.

The group decided to do what they could with what they had and started serving the homeless of downtown Portland. They have a broad, global vision to serve people all over the world, while strongly believing in the importance of being faithful over the small things.
